Final project
DESIGN BRIEF
"Bring Information to life."
Problem: food wastage
How could you take this information and bring it to life in order to reveal
useful information to users and promote behaviour change?
With my group - Nova, Sabrina, Kaavya and I, we were to bring information to life to promote behaviour change of our chosen problem.
Problem
Food Waste
Food waste is a worldwide issue that negatively impacts both the socio-economy and environment. 6% of global greenhouse gas emissions are a direct result of food loss and waste. In 2011, New Zealand households alone were estimated to have wasted 224,000 tonnes of food
Design Statement
A New Zealand family needs a way to visualise the shelf life of food types and food they have in their fridge to promote behaviour change that prevents food waste.
Process
Brainstorm
Using information from the interview and data collected we created empathy boards, storyboards and personas to further understand the problem. We then created a brainstorm of different ideas. After that, we prioritised our ideas based on the following criteria:
-
The idea seems feasible.
-
As far as we know, the idea has not been designed previously.
-
The idea promotes behaviour change related to the problem of food waste.
-
The idea is tangible and has the potential to be interacted with by the user.

Final Decision
Final Decision After User Feedback
After consideration of each idea we decided to chose the following additions for the design:
-
LED strips that keep a record of remaining shelf life as they are activated one the “leaves” are plugged into the stem
-
An app to help users see how much food they have at home and its remaining shelf life when they are out and about or grocery shopping. This is to reduce over buying food.
